Why I Built Next Stock®: One Simple Answer in a World of Investing Noise

Why I Built Next Stock®: One Simple Answer in a World of Investing Noise

Atilla Otaner, Founder of Next Stock®

A few years ago, I was exactly where a lot of people are today: fully invested in index funds, and happy about it. Index funds are great: low fees, broad diversification, and you don’t have to think too hard. I still believe in them.

But I wanted more. I liked certain companies not as tickers, but as products I actually used and understood: Tesla, Apple. I wanted to own a piece of them directly. So I did what anyone would do: I started researching.

That’s when the information overflow happened.

The Jungle

The Jungle

I opened a stock research site and got a dashboard with many data points I didn’t ask for. I opened another and got a lengthy article. Every source assumed I already knew what I was looking for: P/E ratios, technical indicators, analyst consensus jargon, when all I actually wanted was one simple thing:

“What should be my next stock to buy?”

Not a terminal. Not a jungle of charts. Just a straight, honest answer, with enough reasoning behind it that I could trust it.

That question is where the name came from, and it’s not changing. That’s the entire premise of Next Stock®: we exist to answer that one question, as simply as possible.

Building for Clarity First

Building for Clarity First

I have a background that straddles both worlds. A Master’s in Computer Science and a diploma in Industrial Managerial Economics, both from Sweden. So I understand the appeal of dense, data rich platforms packed with every metric imaginable. There’s real value in that depth, and plenty of great tools deliver it. But that wasn’t the problem I was personally trying to solve. I already had access to all the data in the world. What I wanted most was clarity.

All of that work happens behind the scenes though. What you actually see is simple, by design. I started with the question itself, and built Next Stock® around answering it as directly as possible:

  • Next Stock® Long Term Pick: one stock, chosen for people who want to compound quietly over time.

  • Next Stock® Short Term Pick: one stock, for people chasing a quicker opportunity.

  • Top 10 Lists, Price Targets, Comparisons, and Portfolios: for when you want to go a layer deeper, on your own terms, still without the noise.

If you log into Next Stock® expecting bells and whistles, you might be surprised by how quiet it is. That’s on purpose. No dashboards trying to impress you. No overwhelming research rabbit hole. Just the answer, and the reasoning behind it, when you want it.

No Human Opinions, No Bias

No Human Opinions, No Bias

Every pick and every target price comes from an algorithm reading actual earnings reports and price history, not a human’s gut feeling, not a sponsored placement, not a hot take from financial television. When a stock looks overpriced, the tool says so. It’s not built to only ever say “buy.”

Ten Years of Refining and Improving

Ten Years of Refining and Improving

Here’s the part of the story that doesn’t show up on a features page. When you start from nothing, the hard problem isn’t opinion, it’s arriving at an honest target price for a stock in the first place. That takes data, a formula, and a lot of humility.

For over ten years now, I’ve been refining the algorithm behind Next Stock®. The process is always the same: I backtest a pick, look at where the target price ended up being wrong, and go back into the formula to understand why. Sometimes it’s a signal that mattered more than I’d weighted it. Sometimes it’s a signal that mattered less. Either way, the formula gets a little sharper each time.

That loop, backtest, learn, refine, repeat, is the actual reason our accuracy numbers have kept improving year over year. It’s also the reason I’m comfortable putting my name behind this product. It isn’t a black box I built once and walked away from. It’s something I’ve been quietly stress testing against real market outcomes for a decade, and I still do it today.

I’m also user number one. I use Next Stock® myself to build my own portfolio, with my own money. If I’m going to ask anyone to trust these picks, I have to trust them first.

We’ve published our accuracy numbers openly since 2022, and they’ve held up a 93% average directional accuracy over the last three years.
Disclaimer: Stock trading involves significant risk. These figures represent historical backtested performance and do not guarantee future results. Individual results will vary.

Why It’s Priced Like a Coffee

Why It’s Priced Like a Coffee

I’ll be honest about something most software founders won’t admit out loud: pricing low is a risk. There’s a well known quirk of human psychology where a lower price can quietly signal lower value, even when the underlying product is just as strong. A $6.90 USD (9.90 CAD) a month tool has to work harder to earn trust than a $600 a month one, purely because of the number on the price tag. We also offer a 30 day free trial as a start.

I priced Next Stock® low anyway, because I built it first and foremost for the person I was a few years ago: invested in index funds, curious about individual stocks, drowning in information, and looking for a straight answer at a price that felt like an easy decision.

That said, simple and affordable doesn’t mean small. Our portfolio templates scale all the way up to $1 Billion, and we’re just as happy to have a seasoned hedge fund manager checking our Billion Dollar Club portfolio as we are welcoming someone buying their very first share. Good, honest data is useful at every size of account.

My ambition is for Next Stock® to feel the way a well designed, affordable product should feel: genuinely useful and accessible to anyone, at any level. Built for anyone who wants a clear answer, and just as welcome in the hands of a professional.
